Health Insurance
Health Insurance.
First, when you are starting out with a young family
and children enter the picture for the next several years,
it may be well to opt for an insurance policy that either
offers a maternity rider, or that is specifically designed
to cover pregnancy. The cost for hospital stays are
exorbitant and unrealistic to cover, especially for a young
family with modest income. There is an absolute need for
proper health coverage for this time of life that includes
pregnancy, prenatal and well-baby care. Even then, there are
still many options available to choose from that can offer a
wide range of premium costs and out of pocket expenses. For
example, some plans offer different options for how long the
mother and child will stay in the hospital after the birth
of the baby: everywhere from one week to as little as
several hours.
Second, is that stage of life when the children begin to
get a little older and the sniffles and scratches begin to
be a part of everyday life. Now you must decide if routine
doctor visits are something you want covered, or if you are
comfortable with only major medical coverage. Some people
are comfortable with purchasing major medical coverage and
paying for an occasional doctor visit as the need arises;
others are more conservative and would rather be protected
for routine visits. It is true that purchasing major medical
will drastically lower your premiums, however, there is a
way to have your cake and eat it too by obtaining major
medical coverage as well as coverage for routine doctor
visits. The program is called something along the lines of
"Basic Care" which offers major medical but with a much
higher deductible, as well as coverage for routine doctor's
care visits but with a higher co-pay.
Usually there is a cap on these plans that offers
protection from the risk of catastrophic expenses. For the
money-conscious family or individual, these kinds of plans
offer a great degree of flexibility as you are not tied to a
limited number of qualified doctors you must use while at
the same time enjoying the benefits of routine physician
visits and the security of major medical coverage.
The third stage is when the kids are grown up and have left
home and you are experiencing the empty nest syndrome. There
is much less of a need for bumps and bruises, sniffles and
scratches being treated and more of a focus on medical
expertise is needed - things like liver and gallbladder
problems, prescription drugs, high blood pressure and
cholesterol that become a problem. This is when you need
medical coverage that focuses on things like preventative
maintenance and prescription costs.
Medical coverage can be found in a variety of ways: HMO to
private insurance coverage. Whatever the coverage may be,
you should feel comfortable with what the product offers and
feel good about the companies availability to contact them
with concerns and questions. customer support is a real
issue that you should consider carefully when making a
decision on purchasing medical coverage. |
